Servant Leadership

True leadership is a journey of surrender and knowing whom I serve. It brings memories of my leadership in the past and reveals my shortcomings as a leader.

Surrendering is the beginning of leadership because if you are not fully surrendered, it becomes a challenge to align your will to God’s purpose for your life. You begin to chase things that are not purposeful and lead a life of unfulfillment. With God as a center point, you not only become content with life, but you also focus on what God intended your life to be. Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

David’s heart belonged to God; his life was a testament to this because he had surrendered all of himself. His life was not perfect, to say the least, but he admitted his faults and let God control his life. A perfect example was when his son, whom he had gotten with Bathsheba, got ill, David prayed and sought the Lord to heal him, but the son died, and it was God’s punishment to David because of what he had done. David did not forsake the Lord, but he washed up and went and worshiped the Lord. How many of us as leaders would do this, continue, and even worship the Lord after such an enormous heartbreak and even after doing such a heinous crime? David could have rejected the Lord and cowered and rebelled against the Lord, but David did not. That is why we need to have a heart like David and not an Absalom or King Saul. Absalom was cunning, crafty, and disloyal, and King Saul was prideful and insecure. Traits that are brought by fear of rebellion and insecurity in your heart.

It thus all boils down to the heart and the posture of your heart. God’s heart is so pure and full of radiance that we should all strive to love like Him. John 3:16 (NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. God gave His only Son so that the lost can have a place in eternity with Him. As true leaders, we need to seek the lost and fight injustices in our communities. A very good example is the leader in India, Mahatma Gandhi, who was a leader who sacrificed his own desires and fought until he was executed by his own people. How much more can I accomplish because I am in the Lord? How much more is expected of me because I have the Holy Spirit with me? This is a very real challenge in my life that I now live with because I should be surrendered to God’s will. I serve a big God, and he will take care of me as I take care of his business.
